Astrology in Crypto Trading: Evidence and Crypto Astrology Tools

Oct 9, 2026

Quick answer: Astrology plays a role in crypto trading mainly through what traders believe and watch: Bitcoin's "birth chart" (the genesis block of January 3, 2009), moon phases, Mercury retrograde and eclipses. There's no reliable evidence that any of it predicts prices. When we tested 226 full and new moons against Bitcoin from 2017 to 2026, no gap came close to significance (lowest p = 0.22). Use it as a journaling lens, never as a signal.

Crypto has always had a soft spot for the sky. "Wen moon" is practically the industry motto, and every eclipse brings a fresh batch of Bitcoin charts with arrows on them. So it's fair to ask two plain questions: what role does astrology actually play in crypto trading, and if you want to explore it, which tools are worth the money?

This guide covers both. It explains how crypto astrologers work, what the research says (including a 2026 finance paper that gets quoted a lot and summarised wrong a lot), and compares ten real tools by price, as listed on their own pages in October 2026.

Why astrology shows up in crypto at all

Astrology is mainstream entertainment. In a Pew Research Center survey from fall 2024, 28% of U.S. adults said they consult astrology or a horoscope at least once a year, and 27% said they believe the stars and planets can affect people's lives. Pew also found that more people engage with astrology, tarot or fortune tellers "mostly just for fun" (20% of adults) than because they think it gives helpful insights (10%).

Crypto gives that interest an unusually tidy target. Bitcoin has an exact, public birth moment stamped into its first block, which is more than most companies can say. The market trades around the clock, it's heavy on retail traders, and it runs on stories. Put those together and the role of astrology becomes clear: it's a source of dates to watch, posts to share and narratives to trade around. Whether the planets do anything is a separate question, and we'll get to it.

How crypto astrologers actually work

Here's the toolkit, described the way practitioners use it.

Bitcoin's natal chart

A natal chart is a map of the sky at a moment of birth. For Bitcoin, most astrologers use the genesis block, timestamped January 3, 2009 at 18:15 UTC. In the standard Western (tropical) zodiac, that puts the Sun at about 13° Capricorn, with Mars, Jupiter and Pluto also in Capricorn and the Moon in early Aries. The Moon was a waxing crescent, about 42% lit.

Two caveats come with every Bitcoin chart. Satoshi Nakamoto never said where block zero was mined, so the parts of a chart that depend on location (the ascendant and the houses) are guesswork. And not everyone agrees on the birthday: some astrologers prefer the white paper (October 31, 2008) or block 1 (January 9, 2009). Our Bitcoin natal chart guide walks through the chart in detail.

Transits

Transits compare where the planets are today with where they sat in the natal chart. When a moving planet reaches a sensitive angle to a natal planet (0° conjunction, 90° square, 120° trine, 180° opposition), astrologers read meaning into it. In traditional symbolism Jupiter stands for expansion and Saturn for restriction, so "Jupiter crossing Bitcoin's natal Sun" gets read as bullish and a hard Saturn angle as a squeeze.

Lunar phases

The simplest and most popular idea: markets top near full moons and bottom near new moons, or the reverse, depending on who you ask. A full or new moon arrives about every 14.8 days, which makes this easy to watch and easy to test. Our guide to reading the moon cycle chart explains the phases.

Retrogrades

A planet is "retrograde" when, seen from Earth, it appears to drift backward against the stars for a while. It's an optical effect of two planets orbiting at different speeds. Mercury does it about three times a year for roughly three weeks each time, and folklore blames those windows for miscommunication, tech glitches and bad contracts. Some traders also watch the "stations," the days a planet appears to stop and turn, as possible market turning points. The next Mercury retrograde runs from October 24 to November 13, 2026 (UTC).

Eclipses

Eclipses come in seasons, roughly twice a year, with about four to seven per year worldwide. Because they are dramatic and predictable, they're a favourite marker for crypto astrologers. Our eclipse and Bitcoin post puts the dates on the price chart.

Gann-style cycles

W.D. Gann was an early 20th-century trader known for time cycles, geometric angles and planetary references. Modern Gann-style tools convert planetary positions into "planetary price lines" (a planet's zodiac degree turned into a price level), draw Square of Nine grids, and flag dates when planets form key angles. It's the most numerical corner of financial astrology, which makes it look rigorous whether or not it is.

Tropical vs sidereal

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the fixed stars. Because Earth's axis slowly wobbles, the two now differ by about 24°. Same genesis timestamp, different answer: Bitcoin's Sun is about 13° Capricorn in tropical and about 19.5° Sagittarius in sidereal (Lahiri). The full story is in Bitcoin: sidereal vs tropical.

Notice how many choices a crypto astrologer makes before saying anything: which birth chart, which zodiac, which planets, which angles, how many days of leeway. Every extra choice makes it easier to find a pattern after the fact, and that matters for the evidence.

What the evidence says

Our test: 226 moon phases vs Bitcoin

We lined up Bitcoin's daily closes from August 2017 to October 2026 with 113 full moons and 113 new moons, computed to the minute. Buying at the close on a full moon and holding a week averaged +0.21%. After a new moon it averaged +1.35%. After any day, +1.08%. Random sets of days differ by that much all the time: the lowest p-value across every horizon was 0.22, and the small "edge" in the half-cycle test shrank to nothing when we shifted the dates by one day. The full method and tables are in Do moon phases move Bitcoin?.

The Mercury retrograde paper: belief, not planets

The study most often cited here is "Cultural beliefs and equity prices: Evidence from astrological belief in Mercury retrograde" by Yanling Qi, Hang Wang and Bohui Zhang, published in the Journal of Banking & Finance (volume 192, 2026). It looks at stock market indices in 48 countries, not crypto. The latest working-paper version reports that index returns ran about 3.5% a year lower during Mercury retrograde periods than at other times. Earlier drafts put it at about 3.2–3.3%.

The important part is the explanation. The authors don't claim Mercury moves markets. They argue that investors who believe in the retrograde become more pessimistic during those windows, which lowers sentiment and returns. The effect was stronger where values are harder to pin down and in more sentiment-driven markets, and they trace the belief's spread to ancient Greek cultural influence. In other words, it's evidence that astrology can matter because people act on it. That's a finding about traders, not about the solar system.

Other studies

  • Moon phases and stocks. Yuan, Zheng and Zhu (Journal of Empirical Finance, 2006) found that across 48 countries, stock returns were lower around full moons than around new moons, by roughly 3–5% a year.
  • Moon phases and Bitcoin. A 2023 conference paper by researchers at Hacettepe University (Springer, Lecture Notes in Networks and Systems) compared Bitcoin prices at the start and end of lunar cycles and found no statistically significant effect. Our own test agrees.
  • Retrograde stations and turning points. GannChart.ai, which sells astrology trading software, tested 264 retrograde stations of Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn against swing highs and lows in gold, the S&P 500, crude oil and the Dow from 2005 to 2026. None of its 48 test setups beat random dates (best p = 0.17). Credit to a tool maker for publishing a null result.

We're testing Mercury retrograde against Bitcoin next, with the same method as the moon study.

Why people believe it anyway

There's always something in the sky. Moon phases every two weeks, three Mercury retrogrades a year, four to seven eclipses and a steady stream of planetary angles. Any market top or bottom will land near some astrological event.

Hits are memorable, misses vanish. The week after the March 9, 2020 full moon, Bitcoin fell 36.6%. That chart gets shared for years. The half of full-moon weeks that went up never get a post.

The rules are flexible. With several possible birth charts, two zodiacs and adjustable leeway, an explanation can almost always be found after the move. A forecast written down beforehand is much harder to get right.

Belief can move prices a little. If enough traders sit out a Mercury retrograde, that can show up in prices, as the paper above suggests for stocks. But that's crowd behaviour, and it's not the same as the planets having a say.

What's in WenMoonLambo's astrology lab

The Astrology lab sits in the members area; logged-out visitors are sent to the free demo first. Inside you'll find:

  • Cycle Calendars: eclipse cycles from 2013, plus Chinese zodiac, Mayan calendar and Hebrew/Shmita views, each plotted against price.
  • Moon Cycles: new and full moons from 2020 to 2035, with blue and black moons marked and the coin's price underneath.
  • Planetary Sign Timeline: Mercury through Pluto, 2013 to 2035, with a Retrogrades tab and a Signs tab, a tropical/sidereal switch, and an overlay for coins on your watchlist.
  • Natal Chart from Genesis Block: the sky at each coin's first block, with today's transits on an outer ring and a per-coin transit reading.

We treat all of it as entertainment, and we publish tests like the moon study so you can see how it holds up.

What to check before paying for any tool

  • Real price data. Overlays only mean something on actual exchange history, with any reconstructed data clearly labelled.
  • Exact astronomical times. Our first moon study used an average lunar cycle and put 60 of 219 dates on the wrong day. Good tools compute real event times.
  • Honest backtests. Look for results on data the method never saw. A strategy fitted to 2021 and shown on 2021 proves very little.
  • Clear cancellation terms, especially for weekly app subscriptions.

How to use astrology responsibly if you trade

If the esoteric side is part of the fun for you, here's how to keep it from costing you money.

  • Write the rule down first. "Sell 25% at the full moon" is testable. "The energy feels off" isn't. Decide before the date, not after the candle.
  • Journal it. Log every astro-timed idea next to what you'd have done anyway. After 20 or 30 entries you'll have your own evidence, which beats anyone's screenshot.
  • Test it with play money. Run the rule on a paper-trading account with real market data for a few months before any real money goes near it.
  • Size it as if it's noise. An astrological date should never make a position bigger. If it changes anything, let it make you more cautious.
  • Don't override your risk rules. Stops, maximum loss per trade and position limits stay the same during a retrograde.
  • Compare against a dumb baseline. Check your astro trades against buying on random days, or just holding. Our moon test found that simply holding beat both moon strategies.
  • Watch the crowd, not the planets. If a date is heavily hyped, any move you see is more likely to come from people reacting to the hype.

Frequently asked questions

Does astrology affect crypto prices? There's no reliable evidence that it does. Across 113 full and 113 new moons from 2017 to 2026, Bitcoin's returns after moon phases matched its returns after any other day (lowest p = 0.22), and a 2023 academic study also found no lunar effect on Bitcoin. Belief in astrology can nudge prices when enough traders act on it, as a 2026 study found for stock markets during Mercury retrograde.

What is Bitcoin's birth chart? It's an astrological chart cast for the genesis block, January 3, 2009 at 18:15 UTC. In the tropical zodiac the Sun is at about 13° Capricorn and the Moon in early Aries. In the sidereal zodiac the Sun moves to about 19.5° Sagittarius. No birthplace is known, so the houses and ascendant are guesswork.

Does Mercury retrograde affect Bitcoin? We haven't found published evidence that it does. The best-known study, in the Journal of Banking & Finance (2026), covers stock indices in 48 countries, not crypto. It found lower returns during retrogrades and attributed them to investors' belief, not to the planet. We're testing Mercury retrograde against Bitcoin next. The next retrograde runs October 24 to November 13, 2026.

What are the best crypto astrology tools? It depends on what you want. Free options include Astro.com for casting charts and an open-source TradingView script. Paid options range from newsletters ($8 a month and up) to apps and web platforms ($18 to $97 a month) and lifetime licences in the thousands. Pick one with real price data and exact astronomical times, and treat it as entertainment.

Is financial astrology legit? As a forecasting method, it isn't supported by evidence. Wikipedia describes it as pseudoscientific, and controlled tests of moon phases and retrograde stations, including tests by astrology-tool makers, have come up empty. As a window into what other traders believe, it can be interesting, because that belief can show up in prices.

Is there a free crypto astrology tool? Yes. Astro.com offers free chart drawing, the "Financial Astrology Crypto ML Daily Trend" script is free on TradingView, and Astrology API gives 50 free requests a month to developers. WenMoonLambo's paper-trading demo at /try is free with no signup; the astrology lab comes with an account that starts with a 30-day Pro trial (no card), then $18/month or $149/year.

The bottom line

Astrology's role in crypto is real, but it's a human role: it shapes what traders watch, share and sometimes fear. The planets themselves haven't shown up in the data, not in our 226 moon phases, not in academic tests on Bitcoin, and not in a 264-station retrograde test on traditional markets. If you enjoy the cosmic lens, pick an affordable tool, write your rules down, test them with play money, and keep your risk rules in charge.
